For some students, a college is a place of study. For others, it becomes the turning point of their life. For Harsifat Kaur, Apeejay College of Fine Arts (ACFA), Jalandhar became both—a nurturing home and a powerful training ground that shaped her into a confident, versatile vocalist.
With interests across art, poetry, writing and creativity, she entered ACFA searching for direction. What she discovered instead was a world of opportunities and mentors who believed in her more than she believed in herself. Read edited excerpts of the interview:
How did your journey at ACFA begin, and what were your early impressions?
I walked into ACFA with a heart full of hope. I had always heard incredible things about this college—its reputation for music, its culture, and the opportunities it opened for students. On my first day, I went straight to the music department.
I was expecting basic guidance, maybe a chance to participate in some events. But my teachers saw potential in me that I hadn’t recognised myself.
Until then, I was a piano player with almost no background in Indian vocal styles. Yet they selected me for the Youth Festival right away. That moment made me realise I had stepped into the right place.
What makes the learning environment at ACFA special for you?
The atmosphere here is unlike any other. It feels like home—supportive, disciplined, yet full of joy. Teachers don’t just train your voice; they shape your personality, confidence and attitude.
The focus on daily practice, meditation, technique building, improvisation—all of it added layers to who I am today. They pushed me when I needed it and comforted me when things got overwhelming. ACFA teaches you to dream alongside preparing you to work relentlessly for those dreams.
How did college help you expand your musical horizons?
Before ACFA, I had only explored Western music. Here, I was trained across genres—Hindustani Classical, Contemporary, Jazz, Opera and more. My teachers encouraged me to experiment, explore and learn every style possible.
They helped me become versatile, adaptable, and professionally ready for the modern music world. That exposure was priceless.
Can you recall a defining moment at ACFA that shaped your self-belief?
Definitely my performance at the inter-zonals at GNDU, Amritsar. I was extremely sick, had a sore throat, and could barely form words. And I had to perform an opera solo with high notes. I thought I would fail. But the way my teachers and friends supported me changed everything.
When I stepped on stage, I performed better than ever. That one experience taught me what confidence, preparation, and a supportive environment can create.
What role has ACFA played in your journey as an artist?
Everything. This college transformed me—from a hesitant learner into a confident, versatile vocalist. It refined not just my voice, but my entire identity. ACFA gave me strength, discipline, opportunities and most importantly, belief.
What message would you give to future ACFA students?
Walk in with passion, stay open to learning, and trust the process. ACFA will shape you in ways you never imagined—if you let it.
