Apeejay School, Kharghar student shares how debating sharpens her logic while Bharatnatyam nurtures her emotional expression

For Class IX student Gitika Prabhu of Apeejay School, Kharghar, the world of learning extends far beyond textbooks. A passionate debater and a trained Bharatnatyam dancer, Gitika believes both art forms have shaped her into a confident, expressive, and balanced individual. In this conversation, she talks about how logic and creativity coexist in her daily life, the inspirations behind her art, and the lessons she carries from both the stage and the podium.
Read edited excerpts:
How do debating and Bharatnatyam complement each other in your life?
They complement each other in a beautiful way. When I debate, I express myself through logic, structure, and words. But when I perform Bharatnatyam, my body becomes the language — every gesture and expression tells a story. Both have taught me how to balance logic and emotion, structure and creativity.
Has debating helped you as a dancer in any way?
Definitely! Participating in debates has given me a lot more confidence as a performer. I often tell myself, “If I can deliver a speech in front of a thousand people, why can’t I dance my heart out?” That mindset helps me overcome stage fear and enjoy every performance.
How did your journey in Bharatnatyam begin?
I started learning dance when I was seven. I still remember watching Naache Mayuri with my mother for the first time. Seeing Sudha Chandran perform Bharatnatyam so gracefully inspired me to tell my mom, “I want to dance like that too.” That’s how my journey began.
What role does dance play in your personal growth?
Dance is my outlet. I’m quite organised and disciplined, which sometimes gets stressful. But when I dance, I feel grounded and energised. It reminds me to enjoy the process as much as the outcome.
Can you share a memorable stage performance?
The school’s annual day last year was unforgettable. I performed a classical fusion with two of my best friends — it was so much fun sharing the stage with them.
What is one life lesson Bharatnatyam has taught you?
Classical dance has taught me that not everything has to be logical. It’s okay to express yourself purely from the heart and soul. That’s where true art lies
