Akshay Uberoi, an alumnus of Apeejay School, Saket, reflects on his school days as the foundation for his career in Risk and Compliance at the Bank of New York.

In this exclusive conversation, Akshay from the 2017 batch shares insights about his journey from school to the global banking industry, highlighting the crucial role Apeejay played in building his professional and ethical outlook. Read edited excerpts:

How did your experience at Apeejay School, Saket, shape your personality?

Apeejay School played a crucial role in shaping my personality. Since it was a small, close-knit community, we all knew each other, and that helped me become more confident and extroverted.

I developed the ability to express my thoughts and opinions openly, and the teachers gave us ample opportunities in academics and extracurriculars. This gave me a platform to explore my potential.

Could you share an example of how Apeejay’s environment prepared you for your current career?

One key aspect was learning how to make the most out of limited resources. Whether it was organising events or exhibitions with a small team and space, we were taught to be efficient.

This mindset of resourcefulness has helped me in my current role at the Bank of New York, where I work with Risk and Compliance. Efficiency is key in handling tasks, and that’s something I owe to my school.

Which teachers had the most impact on your journey, and how?

I would say Ambreen Paruki ma’am, Zinnia ma’am, and Anita Paul ma’am, the principal, were instrumental in shaping my journey.

They guided me academically and morally, instilling values like honesty, discipline, and ethics—qualities that are indispensable in my work today. Being in the banking sector, particularly in risk management, honesty and integrity are paramount.

What advice would you give to students aspiring for a career in finance?

Build a strong foundation, just as I did at Apeejay. Focus on ethics, discipline, and knowledge. For me, choosing commerce at school laid the groundwork, and pursuing further studies like Financial Risk Management (FRM) was a turning point.

My education at Apeejay gave me the confidence to pursue a global career, and I highly recommend others to take advantage of the nurturing environment the school offers.
