By Shalini Saksena: She draws, dances and plays handball. What is her secret? It lies in her energy, passion, consistent effort, hard work, and dedication. Above all, her parents play a vital role. They always encourage her to participate in co-scholastic activities alongside academics.
Her mother, especially, supports me wholeheartedly. “Despite being a working professional, she consistently guides me, motivates me, and stands by me wherever I go,” Dyuti S Patil, a student of Class V at Apeejay School, Kharghar, said.
How do you manage your time between academics, dance practice, sports, and other interests?
I manage my time with discipline. Even if I miss classes due to sports or dance practice, I complete my work the same day or the next. This routine helped me score 100% in my last PT II exam while handling multiple activities.
How did you get interested in dance, especially Bharatnatyam?
Dance, especially Bharatnatyam, is my greatest passion. I joined classes at the age of five, on my mother’s encouragement. I was drawn to its distinctive style, powerful facial expressions, traditional costumes, and unique makeup.
My teacher explains each movement simply and engagingly, which makes learning enjoyable and meaningful for me.
You won the Inter-house competition. What folk piece did you choose, and why?
I performed a Karnataka folk dance in Kannada to connect with my roots, as my mother belongs to Karnataka. Though I initially did not understand the song, her explanation sparked my interest and helped me learn a new dance form, language, and culture.
What does winning mean to you?
As the Prefect of Emerald House, I felt proud and enthusiastic to perform on stage and contribute points to my house for the overall trophy.
This achievement has boosted my confidence and motivated me to work harder. It has made me more daring, graceful, and self-assured for future performances and competitions.
Other awards that you have won.
I have received several awards over the years. These include the first consolation prize in the Inter-house Hindi recitation competition, first prize in the diya-making competition, a Gold medal in the International Mathematics Olympiad, first prize in the Spirits Drawing Competition organised by Rotary Navi Mumbai Seaside, multiple trophies in Bharatnatyam, and a Gold medal in the ICACT Annual Dance Programme.
Any teacher or family member played a special role in shaping your journey.
My school dance teacher, art teacher, sports coach, and subject teachers have always guided and encouraged me at every step.
My parents have been my strongest support and a constant source of motivation. Home is truly the first school, where values, discipline, culture, and behaviour are learnt early in life. Their guidance has played a key role in my overall growth and achievements.
