Arsh Pagarkar, ranked No 2 stands on the podium

Boxing helps students build discipline, resilience, and physical fitness while enhancing focus, confidence, and the ability to handle challenges in life. Meet one such student from Apeejay School, Kharghar, Arsh Pagarkar, who bagged a Silver medal at the CBSE South Zone II Boxing Championship.

In an impromptu interview, he talks about the inspiration behind his boxing.

Tell us about yourself.

I’m in Class XI, studying Commerce. My hobbies include playing online games and, of course, boxing. I enjoy the mental focus and physical energy both activities demand, though in very different ways. Boxing keeps me fit and disciplined, while gaming helps me relax and unwind after a long day.

What inspired you to take up boxing? At what age did you start?

I started boxing in Class IX. I got interested in the sport after watching the Olympics. The energy, the discipline, and the spirit of the boxers really inspired me. Seeing them push beyond their limits made me want to test my abilities.

How do you balance your academics with boxing, especially now that you’re in senior school?

Training happens during school hours on Mondays, Wednesdays, and Fridays. I attend those sessions regularly. After school, I make time for my studies. Since training is just three times a week, I’m able to manage my academics without pressure.

What does a typical training session look like for you?

We start with running on the ground to warm up. Then we move on to head padding, followed by light sparring, hard sparring, and shadow boxing. All the training is done under the supervision of our coach, who ensures we train both technique and stamina.

Do you have a boxing role model?

Yes, Dmitry Bivol. I admire his style a lot. He’s a southpaw, and I like the way he moves and defends in the ring.

Has boxing changed anything in your daily routine or personality?

One big change has been my sleep schedule. I’ve become more disciplined, and I now prioritise rest so I can perform better.

How do you handle setbacks or nervousness during competitions?

I do feel scared in the beginning sometimes. But then I remind myself of why I started and watch matches of Bivol to stay motivated. That helps me focus and remain calm.

Do you have any goals?

My long-term goal is to play in the Indian Youth League. That’s something I’m working towards with consistent effort and determination.
