By Arijit Roy: It’s not every day that you meet someone who finds inspiration close to home — and builds on it, literally.
For Rishun Singhal, an alumnus of Apeejay School, Panchsheel Park, engineering wasn’t just a career choice — it was a legacy to uphold.
In this thoughtful conversation, he shares his first-year experiences at Delhi Technological University (DTU), how he cracked the entrance exam, and what it means to follow one’s passion without always being “the brightest in the class.”
I’m doing a B.Tech in Civil Engineering from Delhi Technological University (DTU), Shahbad Dairy campus. I’ll be starting my second year this August.
It was my mother! She’s a civil engineer, and I grew up watching her do incredible things. That naturally sparked my interest in the field.
My strength was always physics and maths — I focused hard on them and gave my first JEE attempt in January. My percentile was good enough to get into DTU. I wouldn’t call myself brilliant — just focused.
Academically, the first year wasn’t intense, but mentally, it was enriching. I met people from all over India, learned how buildings are conceptualised, and saw how vast civil engineering really is. The first year is honestly the best year!
Earlier, football was my life, but now I’ve switched to badminton. Football is physically demanding, and it’s tough to keep up with everything. But I do hope to return to it.
I’m still exploring. I might pursue MTech, a PhD in civil engineering, or even start my own company someday. I’m keeping all doors open.
