Inspired by his civil engineer mother, Apeejay School, Panchsheel Park alumnus charts his own course in engineering, building dreams one semester at a time

By Arijit Roy: It’s not every day that you meet someone who finds inspiration close to home — and builds on it, literally.

For Rishun Singhal, an alumnus of Apeejay School, Panchsheel Park, engineering wasn’t just a career choice — it was a legacy to uphold.

In this thoughtful conversation, he shares his first-year experiences at Delhi Technological University (DTU), how he cracked the entrance exam, and what it means to follow one’s passion without always being “the brightest in the class.”

Tell us what you’re currently pursuing.

I’m doing a B.Tech in Civil Engineering from Delhi Technological University (DTU), Shahbad Dairy campus. I’ll be starting my second year this August.

What inspired you to take up engineering — and civil, specifically?

It was my mother! She’s a civil engineer, and I grew up watching her do incredible things. That naturally sparked my interest in the field.

How was your experience preparing for the entrance exam?

My strength was always physics and maths — I focused hard on them and gave my first JEE attempt in January. My percentile was good enough to get into DTU. I wouldn’t call myself brilliant — just focused.

What have been your biggest learnings at DTU so far?

Academically, the first year wasn’t intense, but mentally, it was enriching. I met people from all over India, learned how buildings are conceptualised, and saw how vast civil engineering really is. The first year is honestly the best year!

Are you pursuing sports too?

Earlier, football was my life, but now I’ve switched to badminton. Football is physically demanding, and it’s tough to keep up with everything. But I do hope to return to it.

What are your future plans?

I’m still exploring. I might pursue MTech, a PhD in civil engineering, or even start my own company someday. I’m keeping all doors open.
