By Shalini Saksena: She recently won the First Young Aces Badminton Tournament 2025, organised by the KL Mehta Badminton Academy.
Studying in Class IV at Apeejay School, Sector 15, Faridabad, Naira Kohli loves to play chess and read books, besides excelling at academics. But her true passion lies in playing badminton. In an impromptu interview, she shares how she balances academics and sports, among other things.
My cousin used to play badminton, and I started playing with her. I enjoyed the sport and slowly developed an interest in it. At first, it was just a hobby, but later it became my passion.
I was injured during the tournament, and that made me very nervous. I was not sure if I would be able to give my best shot. But then I decided to try my best, even though I wasn’t sure if I would win.
It was when I won the second round! I felt I had a good chance of winning the finals, and that moment gave me the confidence to push myself harder in the remaining matches.
I come back from school at 2:30 pm, eat lunch, and then leave for my academy at 3:15 pm. I return home by 6 pm, have dinner at 7 pm, complete my homework and revision, and go to sleep by 9 pm.
Most of my matches are on weekends. I have been selected for the Inter-school tennis competition, which is to be held at Apeejay School, Panchsheel Park. Badminton is not offered in my school, but it is similar to tennis. But if I do miss a class, the teachers share what has been taught.
The biggest motivation for me is my father; he supports me the most. He plays the game well himself and practices with me at home. He also teaches me important strokes.
I want to represent my country in the future. For now, my goal is to win the district-level tournament.
