The young learner shares about exploring new cultures, mastering new skills, and shaping a global learning experience abroad

Written By Harshita Das: Philip J. Dolo, an international student from Liberia, is currently pursuing a Bachelor of Technology in Computer Science and Engineering at Apeejay Stya University (ASU),Gurugram,   where he is gaining transformative academic and cultural exposure.

Through his journey in a foreign university, he is not only mastering new technologies but also broadening his global outlook while actively working on youth development, digital literacy and community empowerment initiatives. In this interview, Philip shares about his transformational learning experiences.

What motivated you to choose Apeejay Stya University and India for your higher studies?

I chose Apeejay Stya University because of its strong blend of liberal arts and technology, its innovative learning environment, and its reputation for industry‑integrated education. India, being one of the world’s leading destinations for technology and engineering studies, was an ideal choice for me.

I saw India as a place where I could grow academically, culturally, and personally while gaining global exposure.

How has your transition from your home country to ASU been—both academically and culturally?

The transition has been meaningful and enriching. Academically, ASU offers a more practical, hands-on approach that encourages research, creativity, and independent learning.

Culturally, interacting with students from different Indian states and other countries has helped me adapt quickly. The community at ASU is welcoming, and the university environment makes it easy for international students to integrate and feel at home.

What differences do you notice between the learning environment here and the education system in your home country?

The learning environment at ASU is more interactive, technology‑driven, and student‑centered. In Liberia, learning is often more traditional and theory‑based, with less emphasis on practical projects and digital tools.

At ASU, students are encouraged to ask questions, collaborate, conduct research, and engage in hands-on learning experiences, which has broadened my perspective on education.

Can you share a memorable experience at ASU that has contributed significantly to your personal or academic growth?

One memorable experience was serving as an anchor and moderator for major university events such as the Constitution Day Celebration and the ELAAN University Fest. Additionally, participating in Youth Festival, Founder’s Day, World Suicide Prevention Day, Engineers’ Day, Rotaract Club activities, and NSS events further contributed to my personal growth.

These experiences strengthened my communication skills, leadership ability, teamwork, confidence, and cultural awareness, allowing me to represent international students in meaningful and impactful ways.

What advice would you give to future international students who plan to join Apeejay Stya University?

My advice is to come with an open mind and be ready to learn, explore, and grow. Engage fully in academic activities, participate in events, and build relationships with students and faculty.

ASU offers many opportunities—use them to develop skills, discover your strengths, and create unforgettable experiences. Most importantly, don’t hesitate to ask for support; the university community is always ready to help international students succeed.
