She is passionate about sports, especially athletics. She specialises in shot put and discus throw, and is also part of her school’s throwball team. “Sport has shaped me by teaching discipline, focus, and confidence,” shares Adithi Shetty of Apeejay School, Nerul. In a candid interview, she talks about her training routine, among other things.

What inspired you to take up shot put and discus throw? How have these helped you develop as an athlete?

I was introduced to shot put and discus throw by my coaches, who recognised my potential. Initially, I knew little about the techniques, but with their guidance, I improved over time. These sports have strengthened my body and mind, building my focus and patience.

Can you walk us through your training routine? Any specific exercises you focus on?

I train every morning, starting with a warm-up, followed by strength training. I focus on exercises that strengthen my core and upper body, which are essential for throwing. Then, I work on my shot put and discus technique.

How do you prepare mentally for competitions?

Before competitions, I focus on staying calm and remembering my hard work. I avoid comparing myself to others and instead aim for my personal best, trusting my training and ability.

Throwball is a team sport, while shot put and discus throw are individual events. How do you balance this?

In shot put and discus, it’s about relying on myself and focusing inward. But throwball requires teamwork and communication. Balancing both helps me appreciate the independence of athletics and the collaboration in team sports.

What do you consider to be your greatest strength?

My consistency and focus are my greatest strengths. I continually work on improving my technique and building strength through practice.

How do you handle injuries or setbacks in your training?

Luckily, I haven’t had major injuries. I always ensure I warm up properly and follow the technique to avoid injuries. Setbacks are opportunities to learn and grow.

Can you share an experience where you had to overcome a challenge?

At the CBSE Cluster Meet, I had a frustrating moment where four of my six throws went outside the sector. I stayed calm, focused on my technique, and made a strong throw on my fifth attempt to stay in the competition. It taught me the importance of resilience.

How does the school support your sports?

My school provides regular morning practice, excellent sports facilities, and strong support from teachers, which helps me train and succeed.
