Being an Advertising and Marketing Communication student enhanced her learning and skills in strategic and creative communication, market research, digital media, and PR. At present working with Prime Focus Technologies as a compliance analyst, her job is not a cakewalk. More so, since it has only been five months since she embarked on a career path that has always been her calling. Meet Urvashi Chauhan, an alumna of the Apeejay Institute of Mass Communication (AIMC).
In a candid interview, Urvashi, who pursued a Postgraduate degree in Public Relations, Advertising, and Applied Communication, talks about how AIMC helped hone her communication skills.
Could you tell us a little about yourself and where you currently work?
I’m at present working at Prime Focus Technologies, an advertising agency, serving as a client-servicing executive. It’s my first experience in the field, and I’ve been with the agency for the past 5 months.
Did you secure this job through your college’s placement process?
Yes, you could say that. We applied independently, and the college provided support in facilitating the interview process. The college played a role in preparing us for the interview, guiding us on how to present ourselves, and even helping with resume building. They were instrumental in making sure we were interview-ready.
Could you share some standout memories from your college experience?
One of the most memorable experiences was working on a collaborative project with all the students. Whether it was going door-to-door for a survey or presenting our project in college, every activity left a lasting impression.
What was the teaching methodology in your college?

The emphasis was on practical learning. While there was theoretical coursework, the focus was on applying that knowledge in practical scenarios, both within and outside the college. The only time we picked up our books to read theory was for the exams. The institute ensured that we gained real-time experience on how the ad world functions – from pitching the idea to rolling out the campaign – AIMC taught us all.
What skills did your college teach you that you find valuable in your current job?
Communication skills are paramount. As a client service professional, building and maintaining client relationships is a crucial aspect of my job. So, effective communication is a skill I use daily.
Was advertising always the industry you wanted to work in?
Yes, indeed. My background in journalism fueled my interest in advertising, and that’s why I chose to work in this field. What fascinates me the most about the advertising industry is that you get to meet diverse people and their preferences. Working in advertising allows me to interact with different individuals, understand their unique choices, and fulfill their requirements.
What is the most rewarding aspect of your job?
The satisfaction of successfully pitching and executing a campaign. For instance, working on an anti-terrorism campaign for the Delhi Police and seeing it come to life on billboards was truly rewarding.
For someone aspiring to work in advertising, what advice would you give them?
Be prepared to handle the tasks assigned by clients and don’t let the pressure overwhelm you. Ensuring the client is satisfied should be your primary focus. Work hard in the initial period of your professional journey to make a mark in the industry.
