‘Clear and open communication is key in advertising’

An alumnus of AIMC shares insights into his transformative journey

He started on a transformative journey within the corridors of Apeejay Institute of Mass Communication (AIMC). His time here was characterised by an unwavering pursuit of knowledge, an insatiable curiosity about the advertising world, and an unyielding dedication to honing his skills. From his initial apprehension upon joining the institute to the remarkable growth Praveen Prajapati experienced throughout his educational tenure, serves as a testament to the invaluable role AIMC played in shaping his path.

As he ventured forth into the dynamic realm of Account Management, Praveen carried with him a profound appreciation for the insights gained, the relationships fostered, and the collaborative spirit that defined his time at this institute.

Excerpts from the interview.

Tell us about your experience at AIMC. How did it shape your path?

My journey at AIMC was truly remarkable, from beginning to end. When I first joined the institute, I was a bit nervous. However, as time passed, I realised that this institute was providing me with an unparalleled learning experience. The professors, who were industry experts, imparted valuable insights into the world of advertising and brand management. From day one, I felt a sense of growth and development that I hadn’t anticipated.

What inspired you to pursue a career in Account Management?

I was exposed to the intricacies of the advertising industry and the role that account management plays in it. The ability to understand clients’ needs, develop effective strategies, and build strong relationships fascinated me. I wanted to be at the forefront of shaping brand narratives and creating impactful campaigns. This inspiration, coupled with the guidance I received at the institute, led me to pursue a career in Account Management.

How do you approach the process of gaining insights into the target audience and aligning them with the client’s objectives?

Gaining insights into the target audience is at the core of effective account management. I approach this process by conducting thorough research about the brand and its target audience. This includes studying market trends, consumer behaviour, and competitor strategies. By understanding the audience’s preferences, pain points, and aspirations, I align them with the client’s objectives to create strategies that resonate deeply.

How do you ensure effective communication and collaboration with clients to deliver successful campaigns?

Building strong client relationships is paramount. Clear and open communication is the foundation of success in this field. Regular meetings, both formal and informal, help ensure that the client’s vision and goals are understood. I strive to listen actively and provide regular updates on campaign progress. Collaboration is key; I ensure that the client feels involved at every stage, valuing their input and fostering a sense of partnership.

How do you stay ahead of the curve in terms of market trends and consumer behaviour?

The advertising industry’s dynamic nature requires continuous learning and adaptation. I stay informed by closely monitoring industry publications, attending seminars, and participating in webinars. I also analyse successful campaigns, both within and outside my field, to identify emerging trends. This knowledge helps me develop innovative strategies that resonate with the evolving preferences of consumers.

How did your education and experiences at AIMC contribute to your success as an Account Manager?

My education here was pivotal in shaping my career. The institute provided me with a comprehensive understanding of advertising principles, consumer psychology, and effective communication strategies. The hands-on experiences, industry insights shared by professors, and collaborative brand case studies equipped me with the skills needed to excel in the competitive world of Account Management.

Advice to aspiring professionals who are interested in pursuing a career in account planning.

Immerse yourself in the world of brands and consumer behaviour. Develop a genuine curiosity to understand what drives consumer choices. Strong analytical skills, creativity, and an ability to think strategically are essential. Equally important is effective communication and relationship-building, both with clients and colleagues. Stay adaptable, keep learning, and be prepared to embrace challenges as opportunities for growth.

A memorable experience at AIMC.

There are so many wonderful memories from my time at AIMC. One that stands out is the collaborative brand case study project. Working in teams, we delved deep into understanding the brand’s challenges and crafting innovative solutions. The camaraderie and creative energy during those sessions were truly inspiring. It’s a reminder of the collaborative spirit that the institute fostered, and those memories have stayed with me throughout my career.
