Observed every year on June 3, World Bicycle Day celebrates the uniqueness, longevity, and versatility of the bicycle — a simple, affordable, and environmentally friendly mode of transport that has transformed lives across the globe. Declared by the United Nations General Assembly in April 2018, the day recognises the bicycle’s pivotal role in fostering sustainable development, promoting health, and reducing pollution.
The bicycle’s journey dates back to the early 19th century, when German inventor Karl von Drais created the first steerable, two-wheeled vehicle. Over time, bicycles evolved from wooden frames to modern lightweight designs. Beyond their mechanical advancements, bicycles became symbols of freedom, especially for youth and women, providing mobility and independence.
World Bicycle Day is not just a celebration of a machine but of a movement. It emphasises the bicycle’s power to create social equity, offering access to education, healthcare, and employment, especially in underdeveloped regions. The UN highlights bicycles as tools for sustainable transportation that benefit both individuals and the planet.

Speaking about her journey with this viable vehicle, Ms Maninder Kaur, Educator at Apeejay School, Model Town, said, “On the occasion of World Bicycle Day, I celebrate not just the power of the pedal but the story of transformation, passion, and perseverance. What started as a simple ride turned into a lifestyle. With time, my stamina, strength, and endurance began to build. Medical issues started to vanish, and confidence took their place. Soon, I was conquering 100 km long rides and went on to complete four to five Century Rides — each a milestone in itself.”
“Being a mentor and role model, I consistently encourage my students to embrace fitness. On June 3, I also organised a mini cyclothon for my students, believing that such events can ignite lifelong habits of health,” Ms Kaur added.
In an era dominated by motor vehicles and increasing carbon footprints, the relevance of cycling has only grown. Bicycles contribute to clean air, reduced traffic congestion, and lower noise pollution. They require minimal infrastructure compared to automobiles and help mitigate climate change by significantly cutting down fossil fuel consumption.
Cycling also strengthens community connections. From bike-sharing programmes in urban cities to cycle-to-school initiatives in rural areas, this humble vehicle bridges social and geographical gaps.
