CBSE to offer two levels for STEM in Classes 11–12

The Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE) is planning to introduce a two-tier STEM curriculum (basic and advanced) for Class 11 students, starting in the 2026–27 session. This change is similar to the system already in place for Class 10 maths and the soon-to-be-launched model for Classes 9–10 science and social studies.
What’s Changing?
Under the new plan, students can choose either basic or advanced versions of Science and Mathematics in Classes 11 and 12.
The basic tier covers essential concepts, making it a good fit for students whose future study will focus on non-STEM fields.
The advanced tier includes more challenging topics, preparing those interested in careers like engineering, medicine, or pure sciences.
Timeline & Preparation
The initiative is expected to launch in the 2026–27 academic year for Class 11, but this depends on the release of NCERT textbooks designed for two levels.
NCERT is currently developing updated textbooks for Classes 9 and 11, expected to be ready later this year.
A similar two-tier model is already being introduced in Science and Social Science for Classes 9 and 10.
How It Started
CBSE first offered two levels in Class 10 mathematics. In 2023–24, around 30% of students chose the basic level.
A pilot program allowed volunteer Class 9 students in select schools to try advanced-level versions of Maths, Science, and Social Science. The positive feedback encouraged CBSE to expand the model.
What Are the Next Steps?
Design separate textbooks: NCERT will prepare books for both basic and advanced tracks.
Train teachers: Schools will need to equip educators to teach at both levels effectively.
Change exams: CBSE may issue two sets of exam papers or include extra advanced-level sections for students who choose the higher tier.
Update results: Exam certificates might clearly indicate whether a student completed the basic or advanced track.
