From the 2026-27 academic session, Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE) will offer students in classes IX and X the flexibility to choose between Standard and Advanced levels in Science and Social Science. This two-tier system, similar to the one implemented for Mathematics, aims to cater to students’ diverse learning needs and abilities.
The proposal, discussed during a recent CBSE curriculum committee meeting, is currently awaiting approval from the Board’s governing body. If finalised, the initiative will align with the National Education Policy (NEP) 2020, which emphasises reducing academic stress and discouraging reliance on coaching by introducing multiple levels of subject difficulty.
The dual-level framework is under development, with discussions ongoing about whether Advanced-level students will receive separate study materials or face differences only in examination patterns. The National Council of Educational Research and Training (NCERT) will play a pivotal role in designing the updated textbooks and curriculum. NCERT has already rolled out revised textbooks for classes I, II, III, and VI under the National Curriculum Framework (NCF), and textbooks for higher classes are expected by 2025.
This move reflects CBSE’s commitment to a student-centered education system, fostering flexibility and inclusivity. Students can select a path that matches their aptitude by offering subjects at varying levels, enhancing their learning experience.
While the framework’s rollout promises significant changes, its success hinges on timely updates to textbooks and course materials. The education community is optimistic about this transformative step, representing a shift toward modernised, adaptive learning. Final approval from CBSE’s governing body is anticipated soon.
