CBSE: Relaxation for Basic Math in Class 11 extended

The Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE) has announced that students who opted for Basic Mathematics (Code 241) in Class X will remain eligible for Mathematics (Code 041) in Class XI. This relaxation, initially introduced due to the disruptions caused by the COVID-19 pandemic, has now been extended for the academic year 2025–26 and beyond.
Traditionally, CBSE offers two levels of Mathematics in Class 10: Mathematics Standard (041) for students aiming to pursue Math in senior secondary classes and Mathematics Basic (241) for those who do not wish to continue the subject. Under regular norms, students who chose Basic Mathematics were only permitted to take Applied Mathematics in Class XI. However, to provide students with more flexibility and support during uncertain times, the board relaxed this rule, allowing Basic Math students to opt for Standard Math in Class XI — provided they demonstrate the necessary aptitude and interest.
In its latest directive, the CBSE emphasised that school heads must assess and ensure that such students are academically prepared to handle the rigours of Class XI mathematics. The decision rests with the school after evaluating the student’s performance and capability.
CBSE has urged schools to inform students and parents about this continued provision and to make thoughtful subject choices. It was also clarified that once subjects are finalised and entered into the List of Candidates (LOC), no further changes can be made.
This move is expected to benefit many students by keeping academic pathways open, especially for those who may have initially opted for Basic Math but later developed an interest or improved their proficiency.
