In a significant step towards integrating technology-driven learning in schools, the Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE) has prepared a draft curriculum on Artificial Intelligence (AI) for Classes III to XII. The draft has been submitted to the National Council of Educational Research and Training (NCERT) for review and finalisation.

According to NCERT officials, a committee of experts is being constituted to examine the proposed framework and suggest necessary revisions. Once approved, the curriculum will be implemented not just in CBSE-affiliated institutions but across all school boards, ensuring a uniform approach to AI education and computational thinking nationwide.

The initiative aligns with the Ministry of Education’s vision to equip students with future-ready skills. The Department of School Education and Literacy has directed that AI learning begin as early as Class III, aiming to nurture foundational knowledge of digital literacy, problem-solving, and analytical reasoning from an early stage.

Experts believe that introducing AI at the foundational level will help students develop logical reasoning, creativity, and ethical awareness about technology. The curriculum is expected to include modules on machine learning basics, data handling, coding, and real-life AI applications, gradually increasing in complexity through higher grades.

Once finalised, this will mark the first structured AI education framework for school students in India, reflecting the government’s commitment to preparing the next generation for a digitally empowered future.
