The Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE) has issued a directive to its affiliated schools, urging them to establish skill hubs within their premises as part of the implementation of Pradhan Mantri Kaushal Vikas Yojana (PMKVY) 4.0. This scheme was introduced in the Union Budget of 2023.
The said scheme targets schools, college dropouts, out-of-school children and unemployed youths belonging to the age group of 15-45 years. Under this, the students are offered demand-driven and industry-linked skill courses using the existing infrastructure of schools after school hours or on non-working days as ‘Skill Hub’ for imparting skill education and training.
In the academic year 2021-22, CBSE introduced and piloted the ‘Skill Hub’ initiative under PMKVY 3.0 in select schools. The Board also provided comprehensive information on PMKVY 4.0, including details on offered courses, job roles, candidate selection, eligibility criteria, financial support, and the operational framework for the scheme.
In regards to the implementation of PMKVY 4.0 in CBSE-affiliated schools, the notice emphasises that all schools affiliated with CBSE, whether private or government, especially those offering skill subjects, are strongly encouraged to establish a Skill Hub on their premises in accordance with provided guidelines and regulations. Additionally, it underscores that the promotion of skill-building in schools is anticipated to equip students with the essential abilities and knowledge to excel in their chosen careers and contribute to the economic progress of the nation.
The CBSE highlights that the National Education Policy (NEP) of 2020 strongly advocates for the promotion of skill development within schools. This policy aims to integrate skill education and training programs into the standard school curriculum.
