Aviral Shukla, a dedicated student from Apeejay School, Panchsheel Park, recently made his parents, teachers and school proud by securing the second position in the 10th grade CBSE board examinations after a significant re-evaluation of his marks. Initially scoring 94.2%, Aviral’s persistence and belief in his potential led him to request a re-evaluation, resulting in an impressive 97.2%. In an exclusive interview, Aviral shares his journey, strategies, and the immense support he received from his family and teachers.
Read edited excerpts:
How did you feel when you saw your improved scores after the re-evaluation?
I was overjoyed! The initial results were quite disheartening as they didn’t meet my expectations. An increment of 15 marks was a proud moment. I initially aimed for 98%, so I did fall a bit short, but overall, I’m very satisfied.
What prompted you to apply for a re-evaluation?
The biggest surprise was my science score. I had only 90 marks, whereas I expected 99 or even 100. English and Social Studies (SST) were also lower than expected. After seeing no change in the verification step, I requested photocopies and challenged each question individually, providing proper explanations.

Can you elaborate on your preparation strategies for different subjects?
Each subject had a different strategy. For Maths and Science, I was confident from the start. These have been my strong subjects since class 5th, thanks to participating in Olympiads and having excellent teachers for Sanskrit. For SST and English, my mother played a crucial role by providing me with sample papers and checking them meticulously. Her support was invaluable, especially in grammar, which was my weak area.
How did your scores change after the re-evaluation?
My science score increased from 90 to 97, English went from 92 to 97, and SST improved from 93 to 96. These changes significantly boosted my overall percentage.
Which subject did you find most challenging, and how did you overcome it?
English was initially the toughest for me. In pre-boards, I struggled to score above 90. My mother helped me practise thoroughly, especially in grammar. I wrote and rewrote answers until I improved. The continuous practice and her guidance were crucial in overcoming this challenge.
How did your teachers support you during your preparation?
My teachers were incredibly supportive. They motivated us and cleared any doubts immediately. For example, my sanskrit teacher called me individually after the exam to discuss my performance. Such personalised attention really helped.

What resources did you use for your preparation?
I relied heavily on NCERT books as they are well-written and comprehensive. Additionally, I used sample papers from various websites to practise. I didn’t use many reference books as the NCERT and sample papers sufficed.
Do you have any advice for students who might be struggling with certain subjects?
If you fear a subject, it’s hard to score well. Approach it with an open mind and a determination to understand it thoroughly. Identify your weak points and focus on studying and revising them until you grasp the concepts.
What was the biggest challenge you faced during your preparation?
SST and English were my biggest challenges. SST required remembering many dates and events, while English had complex grammatical rules. Consistent practice and understanding the core concepts were key to overcoming these challenges.

What are your future aspirations?
I’m pursuing PCM and aiming for engineering, with a dream to study at IIT Delhi. My interest has always been towards science, particularly physics and mathematics.
Were there any school projects that particularly inspired your interest in physics?
Yes, the Atal Tinkering Lab and participating in exams like the Aryabhatta exam sparked my interest in physics. These experiences were pivotal in shaping my academic interests. Additionally, my fascination with maths and physics is deeply rooted in my father’s influence—he holds an MSc in Physics and MTech. Growing up, I was exposed to his passion for these subjects, which significantly influenced my academic pursuits.
Besides academics, what other activities were you involved in?
I had a keen interest in art and participated in many competitions. During the pandemic, I couldn’t continue art classes but remained involved in school competitions and English debates in classes 9th and 10th.
