CBSE 2026-27: Two-level Science and Mathematics framework for Class 9

The Central Board of Secondary Education is set to introduce a two-level system for Science and Mathematics from the 2026–27 academic session, marking a significant shift in how these subjects are taught and assessed in Class 9.

The move aligns with the National Education Policy 2020 and aims to reduce academic pressure while offering students greater flexibility in shaping their learning paths. Under the new structure, all students will continue to study the standard curriculum in Science and Mathematics.

In addition, an optional Advanced Level component will be introduced, carrying extra weightage and designed for students who wish to pursue these subjects in greater depth.

The Advanced Level is expected to include an additional assessment segment and will cater to students with a strong interest or aptitude in these areas. At the same time, those who do not wish to opt for the advanced component can continue with the regular level without any disadvantage in completing their basic coursework.

A key feature of the system is its flexibility. Students will be allowed to choose advanced study in one subject while keeping the other at the standard level, depending on their interests and future academic goals. This approach moves away from rigid subject groupings and allows more personalised academic choices at an earlier stage.

The introduction of this system is also likely to influence subject selection in higher classes. Performance in the Advanced Level may play a role in guiding students toward specific streams in Classes 11 and 12, particularly for those considering careers in science, engineering, or related fields.

NCERT is simultaneously working on revised textbooks to support this new framework, with updated content expected for Class 9. The changes aim to foster a more balanced and student-centric learning environment, aligning school education more closely with individual aspirations.
