In an inspiring initiative aimed at promoting sustainability and creative innovation, the Department of Fashion Design at Apeejay Institute of Design organised an experiential learning session titled “An Explorative Journey into Recycling and Repurposing.” The workshop encouraged students to rethink fashion beyond aesthetics and explore how discarded materials can be reimagined into meaningful, eco-conscious design creations.

The session introduced participants to the art of transforming discarded denim and traditional Banarasi sarees into innovative and contemporary fashion pieces. Students were guided to merge traditional craftsmanship with modern sensibilities, thereby bridging the gap between heritage and sustainability. The activity not only honed their technical skills but also deepened their understanding of responsible fashion practices in today’s rapidly changing industry.

Throughout the workshop, students engaged in hands-on experimentation with reconstruction, patchwork, surface embellishment, and texture manipulation to create unique ensembles and accessories. The process encouraged them to see value in what is often discarded, demonstrating how creativity can be a powerful tool for environmental change.

The highlight of the session was the focus on circular design principles, where students were taught how to minimize textile waste and extend the lifecycle of garments. They learned how upcycling not only reduces the environmental footprint of fashion production but also offers designers a platform to tell compelling stories through fabric reuse and reinvention.

The atmosphere in the design studio buzzed with enthusiasm as students brainstormed ways to merge style with sustainability. The initiative aligned perfectly with the institute’s philosophy of nurturing socially responsible designers who can contribute meaningfully to the evolving global fashion landscape.

Sharing her learning experience, Deepali Kumari, a fifth-semester BTE Fashion student, remarked, “Through my design project on recycled denim, I learned how growing consumer awareness and sustainable innovations are transforming fashion. The study highlighted the importance of recycling denim to reduce waste, save water, and create eco-friendly fashion alternatives.”

Her reflection captured the essence of the session — that sustainability is not merely a trend but a long-term commitment to conscious creation and consumption.

The event concluded with an interactive discussion on the future of sustainable fashion, where students shared their design outcomes and insights on eco-friendly practices. Faculty members appreciated the students’ innovative approach and encouraged them to continue exploring materials and methods that respect both culture and the environment.

The explorative session truly exemplified how sustainability, creativity, and responsibility can coexist — turning discarded fabrics into timeless fashion statements with purpose and vision.
