Unlike most of the Chronicles of Narnia, this book doesn’t start with four siblings but with two friends—Digory and Polly—whose curiosity (and Digory’s uncle’s foolishness) leads them into a universe of trouble. With magic rings that transport them across worlds, they stumble upon the powerful and terrifying Queen Jadis, and in doing so, set off a chain of events that culminates in the creation of Narnia.
Digory is brave yet flawed, Polly is smart and loyal, Uncle Andrew is delightfully ridiculous in his selfishness, and Queen Jadis is deliciously frightening. Then there’s Aslan—the majestic lion whose song brings stars, rivers, and creatures to life. Lewis paints his characters in bold, clear strokes, making them easy to love (or fear) while showing us the different shades of human nature.
This isn’t just a fantasy story—it’s an origin story. We see how Narnia began, how the wardrobe’s magic came into the world, and how the threads of courage, temptation, and kindness weave into a grander tale. The book is sprinkled with humor (Uncle Andrew’s antics are priceless), thrilling adventure, and moments that tug at the heart—especially when Digory faces a tough choice that tests his values.
C. S. Lewis shines in making a children’s story feel wise without being heavy. His language is playful, his imagination boundless, and his morals sneak in like hidden treasures. The Magician’s Nephew succeeds because it’s both a stand-alone adventure and the perfect prologue to the Narnian saga. It reminds readers—young or grown—that magic begins with curiosity, choices matter, and courage often comes wrapped in small acts of kindness.
If you love fantasy that is fun, heartfelt, and brimming with enchantment, this is the book to dive into. It’s the doorway to Narnia—literally—and reading it feels like stepping into a brand-new world for the very first time.
