Rooted in tradition, Bharatnatyam combines grace, rhythm, and storytelling, while nurturing discipline and focus on practitioners. “Beyond the stage, this dance form offers immense physical, emotional, and spiritual benefits. It enhances flexibility, stamina, and posture, while also instilling inner peace and self-confidence,” expresses Lavanya Sarkar, a student of Class XII at Apeejay School, Panchsheel Park. In a candid interview with us, she shares how the dance has become a journey of mindfulness and positivity, shaping her personality and outlook towards life.

I’m truly happy to have received the opportunity to participate in the recent zonal competition. It was a wonderful platform to showcase my talent and gain valuable experience. I’m grateful to my school for its constant support and encouragement throughout this journey. It was a memorable and proud moment for me.
How did you get interested in Bharatnatyam?
My fascination with Bharatanatyam began at home. My parents loved classical music and dance, filling weekends with performances and stories of great gurus. They enrolled me in lessons, encouraged daily practice, and celebrated every arangetram I watched. Their devotion nurtured my curiosity into commitment, transforming interest into a lifelong passion.
Who is your inspiration and favourite Bharatnatyam dancer?
My inspiration is my guru. I am always thankful for her guidance, discipline, and kindness; she has shaped my journey and remains my greatest mentor in Bharatanatyam. My favourite dancer is Smt Sudha Chandran, whose resilience, expressive abhinaya, and stage presence motivate me to practice diligently and perform with heart.
How has this dance form changed your personality?
Bharatanatyam has made me more disciplined and focused in life. It brings a sense of eternal peace and inner happiness. Through this classical art form, I’ve learned to see beauty and positivity around me. It has shaped my personality, helping me grow spiritually, emotionally, and mentally each day.
How did Apeejay School support your dance journey?
It’s been 15 years since I’ve been studying at Apeejay School, and I have so many beautiful memories with me. All the teachers are so helpful, caring, supportive and understanding. They recognise my talent and always give me the opportunities to shine.
Share your training regime.
I began learning Bharatanatyam at the age of six, and since then, it has been a continuous journey of dedication and practice. I train regularly to refine my skills, combining dance with daily yoga. This balanced routine keeps me physically fit, mentally focused, and deeply connected to the art form.
