He is a student of Apeejay School, Kharghar, studying in Class VIII. He likes playing musical instruments in general, not just the guitar. He has been playing the Synthesizer Keyboard since he was five. He draws his inspiration from his father, who is a good classical musician, and has a lot of musical instruments at home. Meet Soham Sharma, who, in a candid interview, shares that he would like to master all musical instruments.
Why did you pick up the guitar in particular?
My inspiration for learning the guitar came from my good friend. He was the first one to introduce me to it. Also, my father encouraged me to pursue music. He himself is a classical harmonium player and used to play in a band when he was younger. My grandfather is a tabla player, so I come from a long line of musicians. That musical environment naturally drew me toward the guitar.
What style of music do you enjoy the most?
I find classical music the most interesting. The way one can play a simple beat in so many different and complex ways is mesmerising; it just flows with me.
How do you play a classical piece on the guitar?
There are different types of guitars, but the main playing style remains almost the same. From classical singing to harmonium, the beats are quite similar. The difference lies mainly in the strings, tabs, and chords. Even classical vocalists have their versions of similar rhythmic patterns. For classical pieces, I use my acoustic guitar.
Do you have a memorable performance?
Yes, last year I performed at DPS Panvel. I was extremely nervous at first, but my teachers helped me a lot. The hours we spent practising improved my skills, and I was very thankful for that opportunity.

How do you balance your academics with your passion for music?
I follow a strict schedule that helps me balance both. It’s actually made by my mother, and I follow it without fail. I have guitar tuition twice a week, and I spend the rest of my time focusing on my studies. My mother encourages me to pursue both with equal dedication.
How has your school supported your passion for music?
My school has been very supportive. They’ve given me a lot of exposure and encouragement. My teachers, in particular, have been extremely helpful, and I’m very grateful to them for that.
Have you participated in any competitions or school events?
Besides performing at a school last year. I’ve also performed during our school’s Annual Day celebrations, which were memorable experiences for me.
