He is, at present, studying in Class VIII at Apeejay School, Rama Mandi. Football has been his main interest for the past four years. He doesn’t have any other hobbies because the sport takes up most of his focus and passion. He started playing football because a friend encouraged him to try the game once to see if he liked it. “When I played, I enjoyed it. That was the beginning of my journey,” Arnav Punj said in a candid interview.
When and how did your football journey start?

It began with playing at school. Once I got hooked, I joined a football academy for proper practice and training to learn more. That helped me learn the game more seriously.
Challenges you face.
I play as a goalkeeper. The most challenging part is stopping goals and organising the defense. I have to guide my teammates and make sure we stay strong at the back.
Do you follow any strategy while defending?
Yes. If the opponent takes a long touch and the ball is far from his feet, I move forward to close the distance. But if the ball is in his control, I either direct the defender or try to block the shot myself.
Are there any special exercises or techniques that help you as a goalkeeper?
We practise dives and spread our arms to cover more space. Sometimes stepping forward confidently can make the attacker hesitate.
Any competitions you played in?
Yes, I have played at the national level. I went to Jaipur for the Nationals, where many teams competed. Our team won the U-16 match, though we lost the U-13 one.

How does your school support you in your football journey?
My school has given me a scholarship and always encourages me to practise and participate. My friends and teachers motivate me constantly. Recently, we also played at GTP and secured third position. My parents encourage me and believe in my abilities.
Who inspires you as a player? And what are your plans?
Cristiano Ronaldo inspires me the most. I admire his finishing and dribbling. I want to continue improving and aspire to play for India one day.
