Meet Arnav Nandchahal, a diligent Class XII student of Apeejay School, Noida, who has recently been honored with the prestigious CyberGuardian Award. Arnav believes that cyber safety is the practice of protecting personal information, digital identity, and mental well-being while navigating the online world. He emphasises using technology responsibly and ethically, being mindful of what is shared online, and staying alert to potential digital risks such as cyberbullying, online scams, data breaches, and misuse of information. By adopting safe online habits and making informed choices, Arnav strives to ensure a secure, balanced, and positive digital experience,” her shared in a candid interview.

How do you stay safe while using the internet and social media?

I protect my online presence by using strong passwords, enabling two-factor authentication, staying away from suspicious links, and keeping my social media accounts private.

Why is digital awareness important for students today?

It empowers students to recognise fake news, online scams, cyberbullying, and the misuse of personal data. By understanding these digital risks, students are better equipped to think critically, act responsibly, and make informed decisions that ensure a safer and more secure online experience.

Have you ever helped someone dealing with cyberbullying or scams?

I advised them to immediately block the user to prevent further contact, carefully save any evidence such as messages or screenshots, and report the issue through the proper online platform channels. I encourage them to seek support and guidance from a trusted adult, such as a parent, teacher, or school counselor, to ensure their safety and to address the situation effectively. This approach helps them feel supported while taking the necessary steps to protect themselves online.

What habits can students adopt to protect their privacy?

Students should protect their online safety by avoiding oversharing, checking app permissions, using strong passwords, logging out on shared devices, and keeping privacy settings updated.

What is one cyber myth you want to break?

A common myth is thinking ‘nothing will happen to me’. In reality, anyone can be targeted online, no matter their age or experience.

Which cyber threats should students be most aware of?

Students should stay vigilant against online threats such as phishing scams, fake profiles, malware, identity theft, and online predators. Being aware of these risks helps them recognise suspicious activities, avoid falling into traps, and take proactive steps to protect their personal information and digital identity. Staying informed and cautious ensures a safer and more responsible online experience.

What initiatives would you like to lead in school for cyber safety?

I would organise interactive awareness workshops, creative poster campaigns, and engaging peer-learning sessions to educate students about safe internet and social media practices. These initiatives would focus on teaching responsible online behavior, recognising potential digital risks, and promoting strategies to protect personal information and mental well-being, helping students navigate the online world safely and confidently.

How has your knowledge changed the way you use the Internet?

Gaining digital awareness has made me more cautious and mindful while using the internet. I am now more focused on protecting my privacy, thinking carefully before sharing personal information, and being responsible in how I interact with others online. It has also helped me critically evaluate the content I consume, avoid misinformation, and make safer, more informed choices while navigating the digital world.
