Rooted in tradition yet alive with expression, Bharatnatyam has nurtured physical strength, mental focus, and emotional depth in Dishita Malakar. This Class X student of Apeejay School, Greater Noida, calls dance a transformational journey into a confident, disciplined, and well-rounded personality, enriching both her outer presence and inner character. In a candid interview, she shares how regular performances help her overcome stage fright and develop courage.

Share your recent achievements.
One of my recent achievements in dance was winning first prize at my school. I performed Shiv Tandav in Bharatanatyam, which was a proud and memorable moment for me. I have also been honoured with many other first prizes in dance competitions, reflecting my dedication and passion.
How did you pick interest in this art form?
I have been learning Bharatanatyam since I was six years old. I have always loved dancing, as it is one of my favourite hobbies. I developed a deep interest in it because of its beautiful expressions, powerful energy, calming grace, and rich cultural legacy that make this art form truly special.
Who is your inspiration?
I do not have any particular person as my inspiration in dance. Instead, my inspiration comes from within. My self-confidence, passion, and inner motivation encourage me to keep learning, practising, and expressing myself through dance with dedication and joy.
Who is your favourite dancer?
My favourite dancer is Balasaraswati. She was a renowned Bharatanatyam artist admired for her graceful movements and perfect postures. The way she deeply felt and expressed each emotion through her dance was truly mesmerising. Her performances continue to inspire me with their beauty, intensity, and authenticity.

How did your school support your journey?
The school has greatly supported my journey by organising many cultural programmes. These events gave me valuable opportunities to showcase and refine my dance skills. Through these platforms, I gained confidence, improved my performance, and was honoured with first prizes many times.
How has dance honed your personality?
It has greatly shaped my personality by making me more extroverted and confident. Performing regularly on stage has helped me overcome nervousness and express myself freely. Because of dance, I no longer have any stage fright. It has strengthened my self-belief and helped me grow into a bold individual.
What are your plans?
I may not pursue dance as my professional career. However, I will always continue it as my passion and hobby. I plan to perform whenever I get the opportunity. Dance will remain an important part of my life, bringing me joy, relaxation, and self-expression.
