Brimming with creativity and a strong sense of confidence, this young dancer finds pure joy in Bollywood hip-hop, a style that lets her express her energy and emotions with ease, and values co-scholastic activities for nurturing well-rounded growth. Meet Swastika Sharma, of Apeejay School, Kharghar. In a candid interview, the Class V student talks about how dancing has helped her be creative.

Which aspects of Bollywood hip-hop dancing do you enjoy the most?

I enjoy the expressions and energy the most. Bollywood hip-hop allows me to show my talent, stay active, and perform with full confidence.

Do you have a favourite song or routine?

I don’t have a particular favourite song. I enjoy performing songs with powerful beats and exciting choreography because they make me feel confident and motivated while performing.

How does Bollywood dancing help you with confidence, creativity, or stage presence?

The dancing improves my confidence because it helps me perform in front of others. It boosts my creativity when I learn new steps or add my own style. It also strengthens my stage presence as I learn to express myself through movement.

What’s your process when learning or preparing a new routine?

First, I listen to the song many times to understand its rhythm. Then I learn the steps slowly, practise them repeatedly, and finally rehearse them with expressions and energy until the whole routine feels smooth.

How do you balance your dance practice with schoolwork?

I balance dance and schoolwork by planning my time well. I finish my homework first, then study for a few hours, and after that, I practise dancing. I ensure that I never compromise my studies while still giving enough time to my passion.

How does the school support your passion?

My school supports me by giving me opportunities to participate in events. My teachers encourage me, especially my dance teacher. She guides me, motivates me, and appreciates my efforts, which helps me grow as a dancer.
