Students often discover confidence, discipline, and a sense of direction through co-scholastic activities, and football has done exactly that for Kunal Kumar of Apeejay School, Rama Mandi, who shares his journey here. Such activities often help young learners build resilience and a strong sense of identity.
Tell us about yourself.

I am, at present, in Class IX. My passion lies in football, and my focus always stays on improving my skills in this one sport. I also play badminton in school sometimes, but I haven’t played it at any higher level. It is more of a casual activity for me than a passion.
How did your interest in football begin?
I played it for the first time in school, and soon after, I earned a position at the state level. I even scored a goal there, which pushed me to take the sport more seriously. I secured first position at the state level and received a medal. Winning early on encouraged me to work harder.
You recently played Nationals. How was the experience?
I played Nationals in Jammu and Kashmir. I went there with my father and finished in the first position. It felt special because it was my first time competing at that level.
What position do you play?
I usually play in defence, but in the U-17 team, I shifted to midfield because the team needed support there. I enjoy adapting to different roles. Defenders focus on blocking players and preventing goals. Midfielders build the game and pass the ball forward to the strikers, so both roles demand strong awareness.

What matters most in football?
Interest in the game and the courage to stay strong in physical moments. You have to give your full effort and stay confident, no matter how tough the match gets.

How do you build stamina and strength?
Through regular practice. I run around the ground, do push-ups, and follow cone exercises that improve speed and movement. These routines help me stay consistent.
How does the school support you when you travel for matches?
I inform my teachers in advance if I have to miss classes. They only ask for an application. Whatever work I miss, I finish at home or on weekends, and this support makes it easier to balance studies and sports.
