He is, at present, studying in Class VI at Apeejay School, Kharghar, Navi Mumbai. He is a passionate chess player and is proud to have a FIDE international rating in all three formats of the game. He started playing chess when he was six-and-a-half years old. Meet Riyansh Dwivedi, who, in a candid interview, talks about what part of chess excites him the most.

What’s the first thing you look for on the board before making your opening move?

I check if I am sitting on the correct side and that all the pieces are placed properly. I adjust the pieces if needed, just to make sure everything is set right. Then I close my eyes for a moment and do a little concentration or meditation to calm my mind. I look at how I can control the centre and how my pieces can develop quickly and safely. Starting with a clear and good plan helps me feel confident for the rest of the game.

Any favourite chess players?

I follow the games of many strong players from around the world. I also like watching online tournaments, especially when big championships are happening. For instance, the recent FIDE World Championship in Goa. People who encourage and motivate me the most are my coaches. They guide me, help me improve, and always believe in me, which inspires me to work harder

What part of chess excites you the most?

It is planning attacks and creating combinations. I enjoy calculating possibilities and finding moves that surprise my opponent. But I also like setting traps sometimes; it feels great when a plan works exactly as I imagined!

How do you prepare yourself mentally before a tournament or a tough match?

I always talk to my coach, which helps me feel calm and confident. Then I take a few minutes to relax and clear my mind. I remind myself to stay patient and to trust the training and hard work I have done. I also do a quick warm-up by solving a few tactics puzzles. This helps me focus, stay positive, and start the game with a clear mindset.

If you had to explain the game, what would you say?

Chess is a battle of minds. It is a game where you use strategy, planning, and imagination to outthink your opponent. Every piece has a purpose, and every move is important. The game teaches us how to think carefully, to stay calm, and to learn from our mistakes. It’s not just a game; it’s a way of thinking and improving yourself.

A game that taught you a lesson.

At the Under-11 Championship in Jalgaon, I relaxed after gaining an early advantage, rushed my moves, missed a simple tactic, and lost the match, learning the importance of staying focused until the very last move.

How does the school support your interest?

They always encourage me to participate in tournaments and appreciate my achievements. When my father met the Principal and Vice-principal, they assured him that the school fully supports sports. The school has even arranged separate exams and given an option for additional classes after school hours whenever needed.
