She aspires to become a doctor, specifically a neurologist. Apart from being an excellent Bharatanatyam dancer, she enjoys art, crocheting, and knitting. She has also completed her Elementary exam with an A grade in Art. Meet Tirtha Mali, a student of Class VII at Apeejay School, Kharghar. In a candid interview, she talks about her favourite mudra, among other things.

What inspired you to learn Bharatanatyam?

I was inspired after watching Bharatanatyam performances that beautifully combine rhythm and storytelling. The grace of the movements and the richness of the tradition motivated me to start learning the dance form.

What challenges did you face while learning Bharatanatyam?

In the beginning, I found it challenging to maintain proper posture, especially aramandi, along with balance, coordination of neck and eye movements, remembering adavus, and matching expressions. Regular practice helped me overcome these challenges.

Which adavu or mudra do you enjoy the most and why?

I enjoy tatta mette adavu the most because it improves rhythm and coordination. Its strong footwork and fast movements help in building a strong foundation.

Which bhaav do you find the most challenging?

Karuna bhaav, which expresses sorrow, is the most challenging for me. It requires deep emotional connection and subtle facial expressions to convey the feelings effectively.

How do you get into character during a performance?

Initially, it is difficult, but once the dance begins, I get absorbed in the expressions and bhaavas. With practice, it becomes easier to portray the character naturally.

How has Bharatanatyam helped you in school life?

Learning this art form has made me more confident and focused. It has improved my concentration, taught me time management, and helped me balance academics with extracurricular activities.

How do you manage multiple hobbies along with studies and dance?

It was difficult at first, but over time, I learnt proper time management. My family supports me a lot in maintaining this balance. My mother is my biggest motivator. She manages many responsibilities, and I draw inspiration from her.

How does your school support your passion?

My school encourages me to participate in various competitions, appreciates my efforts, and provides opportunities to showcase my talent during events like the Annual Appreciation Day and other functions.
