Meet Dhara Goswami, a Class XII student of Apeejay School, Sector 15, Faridabad, who secured first position in an Inter-school Debate. With a keen interest in Economics and Political Science, she combines academic insight with a passion for art and debating, enabling her to express ideas creatively, think critically, and communicate confidently with clarity and conviction.
Read on to know her journey…
What was the motion of the debate, and why did it resonate with you?
The debate motion focused on freedom of speech, questioning whether it should have limits or remain absolute. It resonated with me because supporting free speech feels instinctive, yet exploring why societies impose restrictions challenged my thinking and expanded my understanding.
How did you prepare your arguments and counter-arguments?
I start by first building a strong conceptual understanding through research. I then study real-life cases to see practical implications. Finally, I anticipate opposing views and framed counterarguments by identifying situations where unrestricted speech could cause ethical harm.
What do you think is the most important quality of a successful debater?
I believe the most important quality of a successful debater is attentive listening combined with adaptability. Debaters must process arguments quickly, respond logically, and adjust their stance in real time instead of rigidly relying on memorised points or rehearsed speeches.
How do debates help in shaping critical thinking and confidence?
Debates sharpen critical thinking by compelling participants to analyse multiple perspectives, question assumptions, and organise ideas coherently. Constantly defending viewpoints, answering spontaneous questions, and articulating thoughts before an audience gradually builds confidence, clarity of expression, and mental resilience overall skills.
Was there any moment during the debate that challenged you the most?
The most challenging moment was framing my conclusion. While opposing restrictions, I could not argue for absolute freedom. I had to balance my stance by emphasising responsibility, mutual accountability, and how rights and limits together contribute to a healthy society.
How do you manage stage pressure during competitive debates?
I manage stage pressure by visualising the debate structure clearly in my mind. Focusing on the sequence of introduction, arguments, rebuttal, and conclusion keeps me grounded, helps maintain flow, and prevents anxiety from distracting me during competitive, high-pressure situations.
How has Apeejay School supported your debating journey?
The school has played a vital role by offering regular debating platforms and encouraging in-depth research. Teachers mentor us patiently, while peers provide healthy competition, creating an environment where questioning ideas is valued, and students develop confidence and thinking.
What advice would you give to those interested in debating?
Approach debating like a strategic game. Learn your arguments well, observe opponents closely, and improvise confidently. Mistakes should not discourage you; instead, treat them as learning opportunities that refine skill, courage, and perspective maturity.
How do you see debating helping you in your future career?
Debating will help me professionally by strengthening composure, communication, and respectful disagreement. It has taught me empathy, active listening, and persuasive articulation. These skills are essential for leadership roles, collaborative environments, and informed decision-making across diverse career paths globally.
