Fashion is more than just clothing; it is a language of self-expression, creativity, and culture. It defines how individuals present themselves to the world and often mirrors societal changes and trends. Shedding more light onto this specific topic, Apeejay School, Mahavir Marg has introduced Fashion Studies as an elective subject for Classes XI and XII which plays a crucial role in shaping young minds for future-ready careers in design and creative industries.
At its core, fashion is about acceptance. A style becomes a fashion only when it is embraced by a group, regardless of size. Through Fashion Studies, students learn that fashion is dynamic, ever-evolving, and deeply connected to identity. It empowers individuals to communicate values, showcase personalities, and build self-confidence. This makes understanding fashion not just an art, but a life skill.
The curriculum introduces students to fundamental concepts such as color theory and combinations, pattern making, printing techniques, dyeing processes, and the history of fashion. These topics provide both theoretical knowledge and practical exposure. Students learn to design garments, understand textures and fabrics, and explore traditional and contemporary techniques of surface ornamentation. Beyond clothing, the subject delves into accessories, footwear, and styling – offering a holistic view of the fashion world.
Why is this important?
First, it nurtures creativity and innovation, qualities essential for the 21st Century workforce. Second, it opens doors to diverse career opportunities in fields like fashion design, textile technology, merchandising, fashion journalism, styling, and entrepreneurship. Students interested in higher education in design find this subject an excellent foundation for courses at premier institutes like NIFT, NID, and international fashion schools.
Moreover, fashion has a strong link with culture and sustainability. Today, as the world moves towards eco-friendly practices, students learn about responsible fashion, recycling, upcycling, and ethical sourcing, preparing them to lead the change in future industries.

“Fashion means expression. Fashion is a visible extension of one’s personality. You are what you wear, you wear what you are,” Ms Ankita, TGT Fashion Studies, Apeejay School Mahavir Marg explained.
By including Fashion Studies in Senior Secondary Education, CBSE aims to combine creativity with career readiness. It equips students with practical skills, aesthetic sense, and industry knowledge, ensuring they are not only aware of trends but also capable of creating them. For many, this subject becomes the stepping stone to turning passion into a profession, where art meets commerce.
