Avijit Sahu is quite a tremendous artist. Even during this interview, he let his artwork do the talking. The class 11 medical students’ artwork on ‘Unity in Diversity’ theme got selected for the ICS 2023. In this week’s Apeejay Aspiring Artist category, the prodigy speaks about his artistic visions and also highlights his aim of becoming a doctor in life. Read edited excerpts:
How did art come into your life Avijit?
I was in second class when I started drawing. My mother would teach me art back then. She is an art aficionado having practiced a lot in her school days. So, I started out with basic nature sceneries such as trees and shapes of houses.

What is your favorite art form?
Live sketches – I have made some live sketches of my friends to begin with. And they all seemed to like it. (luckily no one had any complaints.) But live sketches are special. Copying the real person on canvas excites me the most. It is very realistic as an art form.
Every artist has their own understanding of art? What’s yours?
Copying my surroundings and imagination on paper!
How should a beginner start with art?
First begin with copying a drawing. As you get skilled, you will then be able to draw through your imagination.
Your artwork was selected for the ICS 2023 calendar as part of the 13th International Painting Competition 2022. Tell us about that?
I had to submit a drawing on the ‘Unity in Diversity’ theme for the calendar competition. I made a temple, mosque and gurdwara with all the people dancing together. The idea was that India has a rich population and however they come from different religions, all people celebrate every festival together. It took me roughly four hours to complete this work. I used poster colours for this. I’m so happy my work got selected in the calendar.
Upcoming artworks form your brush?

They will be on the canvas. I will be focusing solely on that.
How does your school support you?
Harveen ma’am, my school art teacher, always helps me. She explains very patiently whenever I have a doubt regarding sketching or anything else. She even permits us students to practice in the art room during a free period. Ma’am has always backed us for competitions and provides us with new opportunities to grow.
One misconception people have regarding artists
Artists are boring! They aren’t! (laughs)
Any other hobbies apart from art?
I love playing football and volleyball. I play as a striker and Messi is my favourite player. I was so happy when Argentina won the World Cup last year.
Finally, will art be your main profession in the future?
I want to become a doctor, that is my ambition. I aim to keep art as my side passion.
