Abhinav Nair, a class 12 student at Apeejay School, Kharghar, has been learning art even before he could learn to speak properly. This budding artist is a believer in perfection and gives every artwork his absolute best. Happy on being chosen as this week’s Aspiring Artist, Abhinav shares his views on art, his treasured themes, his hobbies and life beyond the canvas.
Read edited excerpts:
Since when did your art journey begin?
I started drawing when I was around 4 years old. My parents recognised my talent and enrolled me in drawing classes when I was in first standard. So you can say, they acted in sync with the saying, ‘catch them young’.

With all these years of experience in art, which art-form resonates most with you?
My favourite art form is pencil sketching, colour sketching and acrylic painting. I am at my natural best when it comes to these styles or forms. It is as if at times I am doing it on an auto mode, my fingers and mind knows the way, the technique by default.
Does your school encourage you as an artist?
My school wholeheartedly supports my talent and gives me enough opportunities to showcase my art skills. I participate in art competitions held in the school as well as events organised outside. I am very thankful to my art teachers at school, for they help me a lot in improving my art.
What is your definition of art?
Art is a way to express your feelings and emotions. It is a visual perception of life.
Very well said! How much time does it take you to complete an artwork? What are the common ideas and themes?
I usually require 2-3 hours to complete an art piece, but it may take even longer at times. For me, perfection is more important so I do not let go of an artwork until it is to my satisfaction. The common themes of my works include scenery, portraits and animals.
Upcoming artworks?
I am planning to make a pencil sketch of a historical monument in the near future.
A new art form you wish to learn?
I would like to learn oil painting. It has been on my mind for a long time.
Finally, other hobbies apart from art?
I like to play keyboard and I am interested in playing chess as part of my hobbies. I really enjoy that game.
