At Apeejay Svran Global School, Sector 21-D, Faridabad, innovative learning practices are a regular feature. Taking this commitment forward, the school recently conducted a creative and interactive Math Lab activity called the Cup Tower Subtraction challenge for primary students. This fun-filled session aimed to simplify the concept of subtraction and make it more relatable, visual, and exciting for young learners.
The activity revolved around a simple yet impactful idea – learning subtraction through play. Students were provided with paper cups to build tall towers and a ball to knock them down. After rolling the ball and toppling some of the cups, they were encouraged to count the fallen cups and subtract the number from the total to find out how many remained standing.
This visual and tactile representation of subtraction made the mathematical operation much clearer for students, offering them a break from traditional pen-and-paper methods. The Cup Tower challenge allowed them to grasp the ‘take away’ concept in a highly engaging and enjoyable format.

Building More Than Just Towers
Beyond strengthening their understanding of subtraction, the activity also helped students develop a variety of foundational skills. These included:
Counting and number sense
Visual estimation
Problem-solving abilities
Motor coordination
Teamwork and communication
As students collaborated and participated with enthusiasm, they experienced a joyful learning atmosphere that encouraged exploration and curiosity.

Teachers Witness Boost in Confidence and Understanding
Educators observed a significant rise in participation, attentiveness, and concept clarity among students. The interactive format made the topic less intimidating and more approachable. For many children, it turned subtraction from a mechanical task into a fun and logical challenge.
One of the key objectives of the school’s teaching philosophy is to make learning meaningful and long-lasting. This activity perfectly aligned with that vision by demonstrating how everyday classroom items like cups and balls can be used to teach abstract concepts in a memorable way.
