Apeejay Stya University (ASU), Gurugram, marked the International Day of Peaceful Coexistence with a meaningful and thought-provoking film screening of the iconic Hindi film Lage Raho Munna Bhai. The programme was jointly organised by the National Service Scheme (NSS), Unnat Bharat Abhiyan (UBA), and the Rotaract Club of the university, reflecting ASU’s continued commitment to promoting dialogue, harmony, non-violence, and ethical living within the academic community.
The event aimed to sensitise students to the values of peaceful coexistence and Gandhian philosophy by using cinema as a powerful medium of reflection and learning. Lage Raho Munna Bhai, known for its engaging narrative and strong moral undertones, was carefully chosen for its portrayal of truth, compassion, non-violence, dialogue, and ethical conduct. Through its relatable characters and situations, the film illustrates how Gandhian principles can be applied in everyday life to resolve conflicts peacefully and foster mutual understanding.
Following the screening, an interactive post-screening reflection and discussion session was organised, during which students actively shared their insights, observations, and interpretations of the film. The discussion centred on the relevance of Gandhian values in contemporary society and how principles such as non-violence, empathy, and honest dialogue can address modern social challenges. Participants reflected on how the film effectively communicates the idea that meaningful change can be achieved through conversation and moral courage rather than confrontation or aggression.
Students highlighted the film’s strong alignment with the global message of the International Day of Living in Peaceful Coexistence, particularly its emphasis on resolving differences through peaceful means. The session encouraged critical thinking and self-reflection, prompting students to consider how Gandhian ideals can be practised in daily interactions, academic spaces, and professional environments to counter intolerance, social tensions, and conflict.

Sharing her thoughts, Rimjhim, a student of BBA, mentioned, “Love and kindness can change people’s mindset. We should learn to forgive people; only the brave can do so.”
Another student pursuing B.Com Pratiksha Pal said, “After watching the movie, I came to appreciate that all issues can be solved through dialogue. Manav, a BCA student, observed that we should always be on the side of truth, one day we will win for sure.”
Faculty members also contributed to the discussion, guiding students to connect cinematic narratives with broader social realities and ethical responsibilities.
The programme witnessed enthusiastic participation from students, faculty members, and staff, creating a reflective and inclusive learning environment beyond the classroom. The informal yet intellectually engaging setting allowed participants to freely exchange ideas, listen to diverse perspectives, and deepen their understanding of peace as a lived value rather than an abstract concept.
Overall, the initiative reinforced Apeejay Stya University’s emphasis on value-based education, social responsibility, and experiential learning. By integrating cinema, discussion, and reflection, the event successfully highlighted the relevance of Gandhian philosophy in today’s world. Organised under the broader vision of nurturing socially conscious citizens, the programme reaffirmed ASU’s commitment to fostering peace, harmony, and sustainable coexistence through education and collective engagement.
