Apeejay Stya University celebrates the principles that form the bedrock of India’s democracy

The varsity hosts a grand celebration in honour of the Adoption of the Indian Constitution

Apeejay Stya University (ASU), Gurugram organised a grand celebration in honour of the 75th anniversary of the Adoption of the Indian Constitution. The day commenced with the inauguration of an online lecture series “Samvidhaan”, followed by reading of the Preamble.

The masters of the ceremony, Komal from School of Legal Studies (SOLS) and Pranav from School of Journalism and Mass Communication (SJMC) at Apeejay Stya University welcomed the Guest Speaker, Senior Advocate Pradeep Rai, Supreme Court of India. 

Mr. Rai expressed his pleasure at being invited to deliver the maiden lecture of the online lecture series on the topic “Constitutional Challenges in Contemporary India”. In his hour long lecture, Mr. Rai enlightened the audience comprising students, faculty members, Deans and HOD’s of various schools of the University with his engaging and insightful narratives on the Challenges being faced by Our Country in the Constitutional perspective. He delved into the significance of the Constitution, tracing its history from the British Era to Post independence India and present. He highlighted the role of Media, the importance of India as a welfare state, doctrine of separation of powers between the three organs of the state and concluded by suggesting various ways in which Constitutional ethos can be practiced meaningfully, in their true sense.

Mr. Rai’s lecture was highly appreciated by one and all. The lecture was followed by valuable insights on the Constitution by Prof. Sanjay Ahirwal, Dean, SJMC, Apeejay Stya University. Afterwards, Dr. Astha Mehta, HOD, SOLS, delivered the vote of thanks.

However, the day was far from over. To celebrate the principles that form the bedrock of India’s democracy and serve as a reminder of the vision and values enshrined in the Constitution, students across the University came together in huge numbers to participate enthusiastically in  various competitions such as Debate, Poster Making and Quiz which was conducted wonderfully with the assistance of Faculty coordinators Mr. Adnan Irshad, Ms. Neha Sharma, Ms. Swati Atreya and Ms. Nandini Sinha alongwith student coordinators.

Coming to the events, the topic for the Debate was “Is India’s Constitution a Living Document or a Historical Artifact?” After an intense competition, Keshvi Priya Sinha from SJMC, emerged as the winner. The first and second runners up were Kajal Shukla from SJMC and Kumud from School of Education (SOE) respectively.

The debate competition was followed by a quiz competition – the topic for which was “Indian Polity and Indian Constitution” , seeing a huge participation by teams of students. Team B comprising Kajal Shukla, and Diya Bhattacharya from SJMC bagged the winners title followed by Team C comprising Komal from SOLS and Pranav from SJMC who were declared the first runner up. The second runner up title was secured by Team A including Kumud and Bittoo.

The day concluded with an interesting poster making competition on the theme, “Significance of the Indian Constitution and its values”. Vanshika from SOE emerged as the winner, followed by Simran from SOLS who bagged first runner up title and Nidhi Kashyap from SOE who won the second runner up.
