The spirit of patriotism and unity filled the campus of Apeejay Stya University (ASU), Gurugram as the National Service Scheme (NSS), Unnat Bharat Abhiyan (UBA) and Rotaract Club jointly organised a grand programme to commemorate 150 years of India’s National Song, “Vande Mataram.”
The event brought together students, faculty members, and staff in a moving tribute to the timeless composition by Bankim Chandra Chattopadhyay, which continues to evoke the spirit of national pride and collective identity.
The programme began with the live telecast of the National Level Inaugural Ceremony from New Delhi, where Prime Minister Narendra Modi launched the year-long commemoration by unveiling a commemorative stamp and coin dedicated to “Vande Mataram.” Addressing the gathering at the Indira Gandhi Indoor Stadium, the Prime Minister said, “Vande Mataram is not just a word, it is a mantra, an energy, a dream, a resolve. It is the devotion to Mother India and the worship of Mother India. It connects us to our history and gives our future new courage.”

The telecast filled the audience with emotion and inspiration, setting the tone for the day’s celebrations. The event then began with the collective singing of “Vande Mataram” by students and faculty, creating a powerful and patriotic atmosphere that echoed throughout the hall.
In his address, Prof. Sanjay Ahirwal, Dean Students’ Welfare, reflected on the enduring legacy of the song, stating that “Vande Mataram is not just two words; it is the soul of India that kept the nation united during the freedom struggle.” He emphasised the importance of remembering India’s cultural roots and urged the youth to embody the spirit of Viksit Bharat, contributing meaningfully to the nation’s progress.

The event also featured faculty reflections and student-led cultural performances, including music and dance presentations that beautifully depicted India’s unity in diversity. These performances highlighted how the values of patriotism and brotherhood remain central to India’s identity, even in the modern era.
The programme was coordinated by Dr. Vijay Kumar, Associate Professor, School of Education, and Mr. Adnan Irshad, Assistant Professor, School of Legal Studies, under the aegis of NSS and the Rotaract Club of ASU Gurugram. Their meticulous efforts ensured the smooth and successful conduct of the event.
Distinguished faculty members including Prof. Ananda Padhan, Prof. Sudhakar Ranjan, Dr. Sonam Raheja, Mr. Mohsin Khan (DR), and Mr. Ashutosh K. Singh (DR) graced the occasion, adding to its significance.
The celebration concluded with a collective pledge to uphold the ideals of patriotism, unity, and national service, reaffirming the university’s commitment to nurturing socially responsible citizens. The event not only honored 150 years of a historic anthem but also reignited the spirit of pride, purpose, and nation-building among the Apeejay community.
