Three class IX students from Apeejay School, Nerul, won medals for the Dr Homi Bhabha Balvaidnyanik Competition after four tough rounds of elimination. Parthiv Raiguru won a bronze medal while Ishaan Vats and Sushrut Sadavarte won a silver medal each in the competition.
Conducted by Greater Bombay Science Teachers’ Association since 1981 the Dr Homi Bhabha Balvaidnyanik Competition comprises four stages of qualifying exams based on the subjects — Physics, Chemistry and Biology. But the exam can be attempted only by students from classes VI and IX from all Boards.
Earlier, the students made their school proud by scoring impressive marks in the theory and the practical round. The third and fourth stage of the competition — Action Research Project and a General Science Viva — were held recently, in which the students performed well.

“I am absolutely elated about winning a silver medal as I did not expect it at first,” said Ishaan. “But when the results were announced, I was quite surprised, and my joy knew no bounds. Overall, it was a great experience participating in this exam and passing all the four stages and receiving a silver medal. It was a proud moment for my parents too who supported me throughout this journey.”

Elaborating on the Action Research Project, Parthiv shared, “At first, I was confused regarding the topic that I wanted to choose, but in the end, I decided to work on ‘Smart Irrigation’. My elder sister already had some knowledge about it, and she helped me throughout the process of making the project.”
“On the day of the result, I was invited to Shreemati Nathibai Damodar Thackersey (SNDT) Women’s University, Mumbai, and was conferred the bronze medal. It was a really great experience to attend the ceremony. Looking back, I realised I learnt many important skills throughout the different stages of the exam, such as practical applications of science and the ability to face an interview. The experience was an enjoyable one and something that I probably will remember for a long time,” he added.

Sushrut, on the other hand, prepared a project on how to improve battery life and build a “conservative structure of an electric vehicle (EV) using Internet of Things (IoT). “I chose this field because I have a keen interest in automobiles. I really enjoyed my time doing research for the project. It helped me learn a lot of new things about EVs and their battery structure.”
For the interview round, Sushrut revised his NCERT books along with State Board books. “The interview rounds for the project and General Science went well. It was really a very nice feeling to get a silver medal. The competition helped sharpen my skills. My efforts did pay off,” he said.
