Apeejay School, Tanda Road student strikes silver medal at Kickboxing Championship

Dhanvi Sharma, a young prodigy from Apeejay School, Tanda Road in Jalandhar, has recently made her school as well parent proud by clinching the 2nd position in the 20th Punjab State Kickboxing Championship 2024-25. She participated in the 32 kg weight category of the Younger Cadets (10-12 years) age group.

In an exclusive telephonic interview, Dhanvi shared her journey, dreams, and advice for aspiring kickboxers. Read edited excerpts:

How long have you been doing kickboxing, Dhanvi?
I started kickboxing two years ago, when I was seven. Now I am in 5th grade.

What made you start kickboxing?
At first, I wanted to learn to defend myself. But then my sister, uncle, and parents encouraged me to participate in competitions like the state championship.

How do you manage school and training?

I have training at school from 2 to 3 PM after classes. I also practise at home in the evenings. I then start studying from 4 PM.

Who supports you the most?
My uncle is my biggest supporter. He’s always cheering me up and helping me to get better and better.

Who teaches you kickboxing?
My coach sir at Apeejay School, Tanda Road teaches me everything about kickboxing.

What do you want to do in the future?
I want to keep doing kickboxing and maybe compete at the national level someday.

Any advice for kids who want to try kickboxing?
Practise a lot, don’t forget to study, and join competitions whenever you can.

Is there any fighter you want to compete against?
I’d love to face Mary Kom one day.
