Balancing academics with co-curricular pursuits is not an easy task, but Class 10 student Mehreet Kaur from Apeejay School, Panchsheel Park seems to have found the perfect rhythm. A confident speaker and active council member, she thrives on stage and in classrooms alike. In this conversation, Mehreet talks about her passion for oration, her approach to managing studies, and how her school experiences are preparing her for the future.
Read edited excerpts:
How did your interest in oration begin?
I’ve always loved speaking on stage. Hosting assemblies or addressing a full auditorium used to make me nervous earlier, but now it feels natural. I find orating really fun because it gives me a sense of confidence. Whether it’s hosting, volunteering, or representing my school in events like CruxMUN, I’ve realised that being comfortable in every environment helps you grow.
Have you decided on your academic stream for Classes 11 and 12?
Yes, I have. I plan to take PCM with Computer Science because I’m really interested in Artificial Intelligence and Machine Learning. I think AI is going to play a big role in the future, and I’d love to explore that field further. I might prepare for JEE later, but right now, I’m focusing on strengthening my basics.
You’re so active in co-curriculars — how do you manage your academics?
It’s true that I miss some classes due to activities or hosting events, but I make sure to cover up at home. After school, I write down everything I missed and revise it. I give special attention to Science, Maths, and Social Studies — I find SST a bit tricky! My school helps me balance both worlds beautifully, as it gives equal importance to co-curricular exposure and academics.
How do you think your participation in school activities will help you later in life?
Being involved in different school activities has helped me interact with many people and build strong communication skills. It’s preparing me for interviews and future opportunities. I also serve as a Director in the school’s Interact Club, which has taught me teamwork, leadership, and accountability. These experiences will definitely help me in college and beyond.
