Apeejay School of Management (ASM) continues to strengthen its commitment to industry-relevant education by exposing students to contemporary practices and real-world applications. In alignment with this vision, the school organised a two-hour specialised workshop on Procurement and Spend Analytics for students of Operations and Decision Science. The session was conducted by Mr. Pratik Goyal, Deputy General Manager at Carrier, who brought valuable industry insights and practical expertise to the classroom.

The workshop was designed to familiarise students with the evolving role of procurement in modern organisations. In the first half of the session, Mr. Goyal laid a strong theoretical foundation by explaining how procurement has transformed from a routine, transactional activity into a strategic function that significantly contributes to organisational efficiency and value creation. He emphasised the growing importance of analytics in procurement decision-making and highlighted how data-driven insights enable organisations to optimise costs, manage suppliers effectively, and align procurement strategies with broader business objectives.

Through engaging discussions and real-world examples, Mr. Goyal illustrated how spend analytics helps organisations identify inefficiencies, uncover savings opportunities, and enhance transparency across the supply chain. Students gained a clear understanding of key procurement concepts, including spend visibility, supplier segmentation, and data-driven sourcing strategies. The interactive nature of the session encouraged students to actively participate and clarify their doubts, making the learning experience both insightful and engaging.

The second half of the workshop focused on practical application, offering students hands-on exposure to spend on analytics techniques. Using a real-time but disguised dataset, Mr. Goyal guided participants through profiling exercises for various inventory items and suppliers. Students learned how to analyse procurement data using Excel, interpret trends, and generate meaningful insights from raw information. More importantly, the session went beyond technical analysis to demonstrate how analytical outcomes can be translated into strategic decisions.

Mr. Goyal stressed the importance of critical thinking while analysing data, explaining what questions procurement professionals should ask and how insights can influence sourcing strategies, supplier negotiations, and cost optimisation initiatives. This practical orientation helped students bridge the gap between theoretical knowledge and industry expectations.

The workshop proved to be a valuable learning opportunity, equipping students with essential skills required for specialised roles in sourcing and procurement analytics. By combining conceptual clarity with hands-on experience, the session enhanced students’ preparedness for careers in operations and supply chain management.

Overall, the workshop on Procurement and Spend Analytics reflected Apeejay School of Management’s proactive approach to nurturing future-ready professionals. Such industry-led initiatives not only enrich academic learning but also empower students with practical competencies that are increasingly sought after in today’s competitive business environment.
