Apeejay School, Mahavir Marg hosts ASMUN 5.0, fostering global leadership

Three-day MUN event inspired students to engage in debates, discussions, and cultural exchange on global issues.

ASMUN 5.0 (Apeejay School Model United Nations), a three-day MUN conference, was inaugurated at Apeejay School, Mahavir Marg, Jalandhar. The event aimed to promote global awareness, leadership skills, and an understanding of international diplomacy among students. It was held with the guidance of Mrs Sushma Paul BerliaChairman, Apeejay Stya & Svran Group, Chancellor Apeejay Stya University, and Chairman, Apeejay Education.  The Chief Guest was Ambassador Mr. Deepak Vohra, an Indian diplomat and advisor to the African government, while the Guests of Honour included journalist and author Mr. Rashid Kidwai and Ms. Priya Sehgal, Editorial Director at Nexus.

The event commenced with a traditional lamp-lighting ceremony and an invocation dance to seek blessings. Principal Ms. Sangeeta Nistandra welcomed the guests and officially opened the event. In her address, she inspired students by referring to them as the “Future of the Nation” and encouraged them to balance their rights with their responsibilities. 

Mr. Om Jhanjhi, General Secretary of ASMUN, officially inaugurated the conference. Mr. Rashid Kidwai urged the students to consider reforms in the current election system for a brighter future for the country, while Ms. Priya Sehgal raised concerns about how the media often exploits religious differences for TRPs and financial gain.

Day 1 also featured a cultural program with a rendition of Sufi songs, followed by the introduction of various committees. Mr. Gautam Seth, the Founder and Chairperson of ASMUN, expressed his gratitude to the organising committee and motivated students to pursue success with dedication and integrity.

On Day 2, delegates from various schools actively participated in committee sessions, discussing pressing global issues. The sessions aimed at enhancing awareness of international relations encouraged students to develop skills in public speaking, negotiation, critical thinking, and teamwork.

Ms. Ria Sharma, the MUN Coordinator, a PGT Psychology and School Counselor at Apeejay School, Mahavir Marg, highlighted the success of the conference, stating, ” The conference saw intense, well-informed debates on pressing global issues, reflecting the depth of understanding our delegates brought to the table.”

Principal Nistandra visited the committees, engaging with the delegates and boosting their morale. In the evening, the “Social Night” added a fun element to the intense discussions of the day, with DJ ‘Hard Rock’ entertaining students with various music genres. The event concluded with a lively dance party, “Rake and Rabab,” followed by an elegant gala dinner.

Day 3 of ASMUN saw delegates engaging in the final rounds of debates and negotiations, with around 500 participants, including teachers and guests, attending the closing ceremony. Dr. Sucharita Sharma, Pro Vice Chancellor of Apeejay Stya University, graced the event alongside Principal Nistandra. The closing ceremony recognized outstanding delegates with various awards, including Best Delegate from each committee, High Commendation awards, and the Best Delegation Award for the school with the most position holders.

Reflecting on the event, Ms. Ria Sharma shared, “It was particularly gratifying to see first-time delegates participating with confidence, feeling comfortable throughout the event.” ASMUN 5.0 concluded on a high note, leaving the participants with a sense of achievement and inspiration to continue engaging with global issues and Model United Nations activities.
