Students of the Apeejay Institute of Mass Communication had the opportunity to attend an insightful lecture by Prof. K.G. Suresh, Professor Emeritus at Apeejay Institute of Mass Communication, and a renowned journalist and media educator. The session focused on the ethics and realities of election reporting, offering students a deeper understanding of the journalist’s role in safeguarding the integrity of democracy.

Prof. Suresh emphasised that election coverage extends far beyond announcing results; it demands a keen understanding of people, politics, and the socio-political forces that influence voter behaviour. He urged budding journalists to engage in rigorous background research,
examining which parties were in power during major scams, the tenure of key political figures,
and the underlying factors that shape electoral trends.

Citing the upcoming Bihar elections as a case in point, Prof. Suresh discussed the continuing significance of caste dynamics in the state’s voting patterns. He urged the budding journalists to approach such sensitive topics with objectivity, empathy, and cultural awareness, avoiding biases or sweeping generalisations.

He also underscored the importance of adhering to the Model Code of Conduct, reminding students that journalists must refrain from publishing anything that could influence voters or deepen social divisions. Balancing speed with accuracy and fact with opinion, he noted, remains one of the greatest challenges in today’s era of information overload.

The session concluded with a lively Q&A, where Prof. Suresh responded to questions on the
ethical and practical challenges of political journalism. The interaction left students with
valuable insights into responsible, research-based, and ethical reporting, reinforcing the idea that true journalism serves the people by upholding truth and integrity.
