The integration of Artificial Intelligence (AI) in India’s school education system presents immense potential but faces critical challenges, according to a recent policy brief. With AI increasingly becoming part of classrooms globally, India must address disparities in access, infrastructure, and teacher readiness to ensure equitable education for all students.
Key policies like the National Strategy for Artificial Intelligence (2018) and the National Education Policy (2020) underscore AI’s growing role in education. Notably, AI has been introduced as a subject in school curricula, signaling a shift toward future-ready education. However, challenges persist, including data privacy concerns, algorithmic biases, and the demand for ethical AI usage.
The policy highlights transformative opportunities brought by AI, such as personalised learning pathways tailored to individual student needs and enhanced administrative efficiency in schools. Yet, these advantages are tempered by systemic issues, including unequal access to AI tools and inadequate teacher training, particularly in rural and underserved areas.

To address these challenges, a preparedness framework has been proposed, focusing on building robust digital infrastructure, enhancing teacher training programs, and promoting ethical AI practices. The framework emphasises collaboration among government bodies, educational institutions, and private sector stakeholders to bridge gaps and ensure inclusive AI integration.
The policy brief calls on policymakers to act swiftly, recommending actionable steps to improve learning outcomes and foster an inclusive educational environment. With AI poised to transform education, a balanced approach is essential to harness its benefits while safeguarding against potential risks. This initiative seeks to prepare India’s schools for the complexities of AI, ensuring that students across the country are equipped for the challenges and opportunities of the future.
