AICTE and OpenAI join hands to offer 1.5 Lakh free ChatGPT Go licenses

In a remarkable move to enhance digital learning, the All India Council for Technical Education (AICTE) has partnered with OpenAI to distribute 150,000 free ChatGPT Go licenses to students and teachers at government-run technical institutions across India. These licenses will be available for six months, empowering users to explore AI-powered learning tools at no cost.

Expanding Access Through Government Schools and Technical Institutes

This initiative comes alongside another collaboration with India’s Ministry of Education, which will grant access to ChatGPT for teachers in government schools from classes 1 to 12.

Boosting Education with AI and Research

To deepen the impact of AI in education, OpenAI is also investing $500,000 (around ₹4.4 crore) into a joint research partnership with IIT Madras. This funding will support long-term studies aimed at understanding how AI tools can enhance teaching and learning outcomes.

AICTE Chairman T. G. Sitharam emphasised the strategic vision behind this step: “AI is not just transforming technology, it’s reshaping the future of our technical workforce.” He added that AICTE is incorporating AI across various educational streams to ensure hands-on, industry-ready learning for both students and educators.

OpenAI’s Broader Learning Accelerator in India

This collaboration is a part of OpenAI’s wider “Learning Accelerator” initiative in India, aimed at distributing 500,000 ChatGPT licenses to educators and students nationwide through partnerships with government schools, AICTE-affiliated institutes, and ARISE member schools. The program also includes training sessions to ensure effective and responsible usage of AI tools.
