AI in Indian Healthcare: Millions of new jobs expected by 2028

A report released on January 30, 2024, anticipates a significant impact on job creation in the Indian healthcare sector with the widespread adoption of Artificial Intelligence (AI). By 2028, AI is predicted to replace nearly 23 per cent of existing roles, leading to the creation of millions of new jobs. The present healthcare workforce of 7.5 million is projected to grow to 9 million by 2027, with one to two per cent comprising technology experts, according to hiring consultancy TeamLease Digital.

The growth in telemedicine, virtual assistants, and data analytics is expected to drive the demand for 2.7-3.5 million new technology jobs. This surge will particularly require talents such as data scientists and AI specialists. Overall, hiring in the healthcare sector is poised to increase by 25 per cent by 2028.

Munira Loliwala, AVP – Strategy and Growth at TeamLease Digital, noted that a 33 per cent surge in demand for tech talent in FY 2025 is predicted, compared to an average rise of 15-20 per cent in FY 2023-24. Roles such as data scientist, developers, cybersecurity specialist, technical development engineers, quality testing, and design will be in demand.

Avinash Kumar Singh, head of technology at CORE Diagnostics, emphasises the active search for individuals with a strong background in technology and AI-related positions to enhance their capabilities. The report also showcases the Indian health technology market to grow at an annual rate of 22 per cent, reaching $35.8 billion by 2030, with the digital health market expected to expand from $12.20 billion in 2023 to $25.64 billion by 2027.

Krutikesh Age, co-founder of DPHS, a healthcare research firm, underscores the focus on AI to enhance real-time monitoring of trials and improve patient engagement. DPHS is actively recruiting skilled professionals, including AI specialists, data scientists, and software engineers, as part of their growth strategy to maintain a competitive edge in the industry.
