‘Academics play a crucial role in career-building’

From an engineer to a food rescue specialist, Parminder Singh Bhullar’s journey is one of purpose and transformation. An alumnus of Apeejay School, Rama Mandi, he now works in North America’s largest food rescue organisation, ensuring surplus food reaches the needy. In this insightful conversation, he reflects on work-life balance, his school days, and the importance of choosing a career driven by passion. Read edited excerpts:

What inspired you to choose food rescue as a career?

After working as an engineer in India for a year and a half, I moved to Canada for higher education. I secured a core job post-graduation, but during the COVID-19 pandemic, I witnessed firsthand the critical role of food security. That realization sparked my interest in the food sector, and as I explored opportunities, I found myself in North America’s largest food rescue organization. It was a natural progression from awareness to action.

How is life in Canada/USA? What differences do you see and what improvements can India adopt?

Life in the West is quite different from what we experience in India. The work culture, ethics, and organizational structures operate distinctly. One key aspect that stands out is the absence of micromanagement, which fosters a sense of responsibility and efficiency. If there’s one improvement Indian companies could focus on, it would be enhancing work-life balance, which significantly impacts productivity and well-being.

Give us an insight into your work-day. What are your roles and responsibilities?

My workday begins with a cup of dark roast coffee and a lot of paperwork. I engage with provincial government representatives regarding funding and oversee surplus food collections from restaurants and grocery stores. Quality checks and distribution operations require a high level of supervision to ensure efficiency. My workweek is typically 30 hours, allowing me to volunteer at the same organisation or a nearby food bank, furthering my commitment to food security.

How were your school years? Which subjects and extracurricular activities interested you?

Looking back, school days remain some of the most cherished memories. I joined Apeejay Education Society in Grade 6 and had incredible experiences throughout my journey. Initially, I had a deep interest in History until Grade 10, after which Physics became my favorite subject. I was also an enthusiastic participant in co-curricular activities, being part of the first team from Apeejay Rama Mandi to attend Model United Nations (MUN) and the International Space Development Conference (ISDC) by NASA. Additionally, I competed in various district-level sports meets, making my school life dynamic and fulfilling.

How were your teachers at Apeejay Rama Mandi?

Having come from a military background, I had studied in various schools across India before joining Apeejay Rama Mandi. However, the faculty there was unlike anything I had experienced before. Each teacher made us feel like family, fostering a unique and personal bond. They were my “second parents,” shaping my values and teaching me the most important life lesson: Never Quit. Their guidance continues to inspire me.

What advice would you give to current students?

Academics play a crucial role in career-building, but co-curricular activities are equally important. They help shape your future and define where you see yourself in the coming years. Choose a field that excites you, commit to it, and you will never feel burdened by work. When passion and profession align, work becomes a joy. Trust me, I live by this philosophy.

What are your future goals?

My journey is still unfolding, and there’s a long way to go. However, I work toward my goals every single day while remaining grateful for what I have achieved so far. I believe in progress through persistence, and I’m excited for what the future holds.
