Gorakhgad, a mesmerising hill fort in Maharashtra, stands proudly alongside its twin, Machindragad, in the Thane district. Gorakhgad, situated at a higher elevation, offers a more challenging and rewarding trekking experience.

The adventure begins from the village of Dehari, right behind a local temple. The path, surrounded by lush vegetation, starts with a gentle ascent. As you walk, you’ll find yourself immersed in the beauty of the dense forest. After about 15-20 minutes of climbing along this verdant trail, you will arrive at a small clearing. From this point, a slight descent leads you to the base of the fort. Continuing along the path, you’ll encounter a signboard detailing the trek, marking the start of the ascent towards the fort’s peak.
The trail from the signboard gradually transitions into rock-cut steps that carve a path up the fort. These steps, etched into the rugged terrain, guide you towards the summit. Along the way, you’ll discover numerous water cisterns within the fort, some of which hold potable water. Scattered near the base of the peak are various caves, some still inhabitable, offering a glimpse into the fort’s historical significance.
The path, rich with thick vegetation, provides a scenic backdrop as you make your way upwards. As you approach the peak, the trail reveals a temple dedicated to Lord Shiva, complete with a statue of Nandi, the sacred bull, symbolizing Shiva’s presence as the fort’s patron deity. This temple adds a spiritual dimension to the trek, allowing for moments of reflection and tranquility amidst the challenging climb.
The fort itself, though in ruins, tells tales of its storied past. The caves, cisterns, and ancient structures all speak of a time when the fort was a bustling stronghold. The view from the top is nothing short of breathtaking, offering panoramic vistas of the surrounding landscape, making the arduous trek well worth the effort.

Gorakhgad is not just a trek; it’s a journey through time and nature. The thick forests, the ancient steps, the sacred temple, and the panoramic views all combine to create an unforgettable experience. Whether you are a seasoned trekker or a history enthusiast, Gorakhgad offers something for everyone.
As you navigate the winding paths and explore the hidden corners of the fort, you’ll find yourself transported to a different era. The sense of accomplishment upon reaching the peak, coupled with the serene beauty of the surroundings, makes Gorakhgad a must-visit destination in Maharashtra. So, lace up your hiking boots, pack your essentials, and set out on an adventure to discover the wonders of Gorakhgad Fort.
