If you’re looking for a serene, pollution-free escape from the bustle of city life, Matheran in Maharashtra is the perfect destination. Nestled in the Sahyadri range of the Western Ghats, Matheran is Asia’s only automobile-free hill station, making it an ideal getaway for nature lovers. Here’s everything you need to know to plan a trip to this tranquil spot.
Places to visit
1. Echo Point: Known for its natural echo phenomenon, this is one of the most popular spots. It offers stunning views of the valley and the surrounding mountains.
2. Charlotte Lake: A calm and peaceful lake surrounded by greenery, perfect for a quiet afternoon picnic or a stroll. The ancient Pisarnath Temple is located nearby.
3. Panorama Point: For breath-taking views of the sunrise and sunset, Panorama Point is a must-visit. You can see distant views of the Prabalgad Fort and surrounding areas.

4. Louisa Point: Famous for its panoramic views of the waterfalls, deep valleys, and historical forts like Vishalgad and Prabalgad, Louisa Point is a photographer’s paradise.
5. One Tree Hill Point: As the name suggests, this point has a lone tree standing tall and is ideal for hiking enthusiasts. The views from the top are worth the trek.
6. Monkey Point: True to its name, this spot is known for the numerous monkeys you’ll encounter. Be cautious but enjoy the views!
7. Shivaji’s Ladder: A trekking route offering adventure lovers a chance to explore nature on foot while following the steps shaped like a ladder.
Best time to visit
The ideal time to visit Matheran is from October to May. Winter and early summer provide the most pleasant weather for trekking, sightseeing, and outdoor activities. If you enjoy the monsoons, the rains make Matheran incredibly picturesque, but the paths can be muddy and difficult to navigate.

Toy Train Tickets: Rs 300-500 for adults (first class) and Rs 45-75 for general class.
Horse Rides: Rs 200-500 depending on the distance and negotiation.
Entry Fee: There’s an entry fee to Matheran (Rs 50 for adults, Rs 25 for children).
